RESCUE: Research on Social Media Use in Emergencies
Staff involved: Prof Colin McInnes
Social media has become ubiquitous in large parts of the world. Prof Colin McInnes of the Department of International Politics is part of a cross-Europe project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council examining how it is used during emergencies - from sudden short shocks such as the 2011 terrorist attack on Utoya Island in Norway, to long wave events such as the 2009 swine flu and 2014-15 ebola virus disease outbreaks. In particular the project (called RESCUE - Research on Social Media Use in Emergencies) hopes to develop a tool enabling crisis communicators to better use social media during emergencies.
