An internationally renowned bovine tuberculosis expert from Aberystwyth University has been appointed to a top UK Government panel to review the latest evidence on the disease.

Professor Glyn Hewinson CBE, a Sêr Cymru Research Chair at Aberystwyth University’s Centre of Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis, was part of the independent panel of experts which published the 2018 Bovine TB Strategy Review.

The new panel, set up by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, has been commissioned to consider whether there is any substantive new evidence or analysis that affects the conclusions made in their 2018 report.

This will ensure work on the comprehensive new bovine TB eradication strategy for England announced in August 2024 benefits from the latest evidence and science.

The panel is chaired by Professor Sir Charles Godfray, from the University of Oxford. The other members are Professor Michael Winter OBE, from the University of Exeter; Professor Sir Bernard Silverman, from the University of Oxford and Professor James Wood, from the University of Cambridge.

The panel is expected to report its findings by the end of June this year.

Professor Glyn Hewinson said:

“It is an honour to be given this opportunity to contribute to this important piece of work. Bovine TB has a devastating impact on farm businesses and the wider rural community, as well as being very costly for government. I hope the panel can help ensure that policy-makers have the best and most up-to-date evidence to help inform their decisions.”

Established in 2018, Aberystwyth University’s Centre of Excellence for Bovine Tuberculosis is backed by Sêr Cymru II, a Welsh Government, EU (ERDF) and University funded programme established to grow and develop academic research expertise in Wales.
