Summer internship in Japan opens up a world of new experiences
06 January 2014
The Tsukuba Summer Institute is an international course which provides opportunities for both postgraduate and undergraduate students from worldwide institutes to promote research and network. There was the option to participate in a variety of activities in relation to Japanese research and sport. Postgraduates Rebekah Wale and Daniel March and undergraduates Leah Kolberg and Andy Jones from the Department of Sport and Exercise all had the opportunity to attend this conference. They partook in a variety of lab-based activities which provided an understanding of the difference in research methods in Japan compared to the UK. Traditional Japanese sports such as Kendo and Judo were of course also included in the conference; nothing beats networking by throwing each other on the ground repeatedly. While they were in Japan, they also travelled to various other parts of Japan including climbing Mount Tsukuba which was an once-in-a-lifetime experience. According to Rebekah, "Japan is an amazing country and the individuals we met during our stay and the places we visited is something we will never forget. It was one of the most interesting places to visit, and it is something we hope to visit again and again. It is a friendly and welcoming place, and we hope to visit again for the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020…and for a bit of karaoke."
