Peter Hill
Peter graduated from Aber in 1980 with a BSc (Econ) in International Politics and History. Since 2010 he has been the headmaster of Dubai College in the United Arab Emirates.
What do you remember most about your time at Aber?
Memories of Aber in the late 70s partially consist of trying to find ways around the towns road system as it was being dismantled for the installation of a new sewage system. Strange how certain things stick in your memory! Needless to say the evenings spent in the Great Hall and the numerous drinking establishments are slightly hazier. The quality of teaching and pastoral care was certainly first rate and it is fantastic to see that this key feature of Aberystwyth life has not changed. Having now been in the education field myself for over thirty years it is with genuine pride that I read about the numerous achievements of the University and its rise up the infamous League Tables.
What are you doing now career-wise and how has your Aberystwyth degree helped?
I am now Headmaster at Dubai College, one of the leading British schools in the Middle East following GCSE and A Levels. Located, as it is, on the edge of the Arabian Gulf, it is certainly a far cry from the wet, windy promenade or Penglais Hill. However, both Dubai College and Aberystwyth University have developed enormously over the last few decades and are going from strength to strength - overcoming significant hurdles to do so. The College here has recently held a series of debates on contemporary issues with input from Kings College and UCL. I am delighted that our next debate will have input from Aber's academic staff so renewing my relationship with the strongest International Politics/Relations departments in the UK!
What advice would you have for a student doing your course now?
Make the most of all your opportunities, both academic and outside your studies, to get the best out of your Aber experience.
