What do you remember most about your time at Aber?
The people. I met some of the most amazing people at Aberystwyth, most of whom I still see and talk to every day. You make friendships in Aber that will last a lifetime.
What are you doing now career-wise and how has your Aberystwyth Degree helped?
I’m a Project Manager for a Digital Marketing and Web Design company. When I joined Nu Image, it was my first job out of University. I started as an Administrative Assistant, but quickly progressed to a Digital Marketing Executive. This was because of my creative writing skills and my ability to pick up any tone of voice. The English department is amazing, and you don’t realise how much you learn outside of essay writing that helps you in later life. Seminars definitely helped me with teamwork and communication, the range of topics studied allowed me to understand different ways of writing and tones of voice. Now, I’m project Manager, and that’s due to my organisation skills which you have to be on top of at uni. I project manage the website designs and builds, as well as the ad hoc graphic designs and website developments.
What advice would you have for a student doing your course now?
I studied English Literature, and one thing I would say is that the department is always there to help. Whether you’re struggling with a topic or something in your personal life, they will always listen. Go to seminars, you never know what you might learn simply from hearing someone else’s perspective. Don’t be afraid to contribute in seminars, you get so much more out of them when you share your thoughts and engage with the discussion. Also, go to Gregynog Hall, it’s so fun and you get to drink with your lecturers, it’s definitely worth it. Also, do work experience at The New Welsh Review, they’re such a wonderful team and you learn so much from them.
