Artist Collections
Handel Evans
1932 – 1999
The graphic works in the Collection by Handel Evans are a result of the policy to assemble small retrospective surveys representing individual artists from or working in Wales. Five drawings and tempera paintings on paper were purchased from the artist in 1990 covering the period in his career 1951-1987; all were chosen from a book published on his work in Germany in 1989.
Evans trained at Cardiff College of Art 1949–54 and subsequently made a living as a practising artist, travelling widely and spending much of his time in the Caribbean and Germany where, in addition to America, his reputation was greatest.
A Game of Dice, Paris (1951) was produced as a student at Cardiff, The Vaults (1987) represents his long-standing involvement with abstraction, whilst The Actor's Dream 1987 signifies his return to figurative painting. The Resurrection 1960, a proposed mural for a Welsh chapel, was given by the artist in 1990 and Limbs (1985) was donated by Alan Soons of the USA in 1995.
