BScEc Accounting and Finance

I spent a Year in Employment as a member of the commercial team at IBM working on the client site for Shop Direct Group. My main task was to design and implement a “Best of Breed” process for Labour Claim checking on Account, which  drove a series of Finance meetings on the Account and which drive 80% of the cost base on the account.  My other tasks included reporting on the risk and issues, completing various reports on the forecast and actual figures of the labour claiming on the account, having weekly team meetings, creating a Work Package Tracker whilst also creating a separate Financial Work Package tracker, and attending meetings on a regular basis to present these reports to people on site and to those who work off-shore.

Participating in the YES scheme has provided me with experience of working in a multinational company. I was able to gain knowledge of how IBM delivers a service to customers as I was required to have regular contact with the numerous teams on the account. I was also able to develop skills such as effective communication, self-motivation, drive to succeed, creative problem solving, adaptability, technical orientation and teamwork.  The experience has enabled me to apply the theory learnt in my degree into practice, and I would recommend the YES scheme to all second year students as it is a fantastic opportunity to improve your career prospects.
