Background

I had always loved travelling and for a long time I was not sure what I would like to study at University. When I was searching for a course and place to study I came across Aberystwyth University and a course related to travelling – Tourism Management. It seemed like the perfect course for me! I applied, got a place and moved to Aberystwyth looking forward to learning English, meeting new people, and gaining a valuable degree that would greatly enhance my career prospects. At Aberystwyth I met people form all over the world. I learnt many interesting things relating to tourism, marketing, and business. I even managed to learn some Spanish! The modules which I enjoyed the most were Tourism Marketing Management and International Tourism. I particularly enjoyed the educational visits to North Wales and Malta. The trip to Malta in my opinion was the highlight of my three years spent at university. It allowed me to see tourism ‘first hand’ and also allowed me to participate in exciting activities such as scuba diving. It was a great experience and I would recommend this visit to anyone.

Where are you now?

Six months after graduation I moved to Hamburg in Germany where I have begun an internship in company called Navelar GmbH. The company operates websites on which you can book hotel rooms and holiday apartments. I undertook a 3 week intensive German course in Hamburg on arrival and I currently attend a language class once a week around my work. I have already visited many interesting places in Hamburg and have got familiar with the city. I have taken the opportunity to watch German Football League and Ice Hockey.

How did you get there?

After finishing University I began searching for jobs and work placements but I found it difficult to secure anything because of my lack of work experience in tourism or a related field. During my time at University I learnt about the European Union Leonardo Da Vinci Programme that sends people abroad to work and gain valuable experience. After successfully gaining a place on this programme I was relocated to Hamburg. Before travelling to Germany I was able to meet other Leonardo Da Vinci Programme participants at a 5 day language course in Llangollen.

What, if anything, would you have done differently during your time at Aberystwyth to help you better prepare for your career/life upon graduation?

I would have searched for and took part in work placements or internships during University holidays as having work experience will put you at an advantage when it comes to applying for jobs after graduation

What advice would you give to a student doing your subject at university now?

Work hard and concentrate on your studies, even if there are some small elements that you do not particularly enjoy. It will pay off later on. Do not leave assignments to the last minute, be organised and complete them in advance. But most importantly enjoy and make the most of your time as a student, as life changes significantly after graduation.
