Businesses are a key contributor to greenhouse gas emissions; but they are also part of the solution. Climate change thus represents both a risk and an opportunity to business performance. Businesses that do not respond to the climate challenge are likely to face higher costs in terms of carbon taxes and a reduced customer base. In contrast, more progressive businesses, who adapt by decarbonizing and developing green products are likely to increase their financial, social, and environmental performance – their triple Bottom Line.

The degree in ‘Business and Climate Change’ will prepare students to become future business leaders who tackle climate change head on through the development of meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility strategies and practices. In this degree, you will combine a knowledge of the science of climate change with the skills to lead a successful business. The degree thus explores creative ways for businesses to respond to the challenge and opportunities of the current climate crisis. It will equip you with relevant subject specific knowledge alongside the inter-disciplinary, interpersonal skills and attributes needed to create a more just and sustainable world. If your trajectory involves having a positive impact on your world, this scheme will set you securely on that rewarding journey.

The specific aims of this scheme are:

  1. To study organisations, their management and the changing external environment (including climate change) in which they operate. The programme covers a wide range of organisations, including public, private and not-for-profit, and focuses on all of the key functional areas of management at both the strategic and operational levels.

  2. To prepare for a career in business and management, including the development of a range of specific business knowledge and skills, together with improved self-awareness and personal development appropriate to graduates with the potential to progress into management positions. The programme encourages the development of positive and critical attitudes towards change and enterprise.

  3. To enhance lifelong learning skills and personal development to contribute to society at large.

  4. To develop and enhance a range of general transferable intellectual and study skills, which whilst being highly appropriate to careers in business and management, are not exclusive to these career choices.

  5. To develop business graduates with an appreciation of social responsibilities, including in the area of climate cha

12 : Support for students and their learning
Every student is allocated a Personal Tutor. Personal Tutors have an important role within the overall framework for supporting students and their personal development at the University. The role is crucial in helping students to identify where they might find support, how and where to seek advice and how to approach support to maximise their student experience. Further support for students and their learning is provided by Information Services and Student Support and Careers Services.

13 : Entry Requirements
Details of entry requirements for the scheme can be found at http://courses.aber.ac.uk

14 : Methods for evaluating and improving the quality and standards of teaching and learning
All taught study schemes are subject to annual monitoring and periodic review, which provide the University with assurance that schemes are meeting their aims, and also identify areas of good practice and disseminate this information in order to enhance the provision.

15 : Regulation of Assessment
Academic Regulations are published as Appendix 2 of the Academic Quality Handbook: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/aqro/handbook/app-2/.

15.1 : External Examiners
External Examiners fulfill an essential part of the University’s Quality Assurance. Annual reports by External Examiners are considered by Faculties and Academic Board at university level.

16 : Indicators of quality and standards
The Department Quality Audit questionnaire serves as a checklist about the current requirements of the University’s Academic Quality Handbook. The periodic Department Reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of quality assurance processes and for the University to assure itself that management of quality and standards which are the responsibility of the University as a whole are being delivered successfully.
