Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding language systems and skills in TESOL for teaching purposes.
2. Demonstrate an ability to reflect on own learning and teaching experience through description, investigation and evaluation.
3. Plan lessons appropriately in accordance with standard practices in TESOL.
4. Deliver and review lessons in accordance with good practice in TESOL.
5. Apply a working knowledge and understanding in describing and discussing a range of language approaches and methods.
6. Demonstrate a critical understanding of key pedagogical concepts and practices in English language teaching.
Brief description
Students will be able to apply their TESOL knowledge and develop these teaching skills through a series of short peer teaching sessions. They will also take part as a language learner in 2 language classes, in which they can observe and experience best practices in TESOL. Successful completion of this module is a pre-requisite for the optional Teaching Practice summer course.
Content
Peer-teaching 1. Introduction to reflective writing. Historical overview and mainstream approaches in language teaching. Communicative language teaching and information-gap.
Focus on language. Guided discovery approach to language presentations. Learner errors and types of correction.
Unknown language lessons. Reflective writing. Situational language presentations and form, function and phonology.
Peer-teaching 2. Teaching the Speaking skill. Teacher as facilitator and other roles. Groupwork and pairwork and setting tasks. Communicative activities and Task-based Language learning (TBL).
Controlled practice activities and published materials. Teaching pronunciation and interactive drills. Lesson planning and PPP model. Lesson planning and TBL.
Peer-teaching 3. Teaching the listening and reading skills. Authentic texts in language teaching. Focusing on language in texts. Noticing.
Lexical sets and heuristics for teaching lexis and vocab. Technologies for teaching and learning vocab inside and outside the classroom.
Peer-teaching 4. Language teaching and creativity. Teaching the Writing skill.
Jobs in TESOL. Young learners. Teenagers and classroom management.
