Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand various relevant ecological surveys techniques appropriate to environment.

Understand the importance of long term ecological monitoring programmes to detect ecological and environmental change.

Apply basic analytical techniques to long term ecological monitoring data sets.

Brief description

This applied module has been developed to allow students to actively participate in long-term ecological monitoring projects across both terrestrial and marine environments. Because the intent of any ecological monitoring project across an extended temporal period is to document and quantify environmental change, accurate and reliable ecological observations are necessary tools to address the local, regional or global impacts of processes such as climatic change and habitat loss. In this module, students will collect both environmental and biological data by undertaking a range of surveys are target sites that have been selected for long term monitoring. The data collected by the students will be banked. Students will then get the opportunity to carry out analyses on the long-term data sets across both the marine and terrestrial setting.

Aims

Understand and apply various survey methods deployed across marine and terrestrial environments for long-term ecological surveys.

Content

A series of lectures will cover: the importance of ecological surveys, both long and short term and survey methods.
