Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Describe the physiology of exercise and training
Investigate the selection and training of the equine athlete
Recognise how the equine athlete can compete safely under differing conditions
Communicate information and ideas in the form of oral and written presentations
Develop a reasoned argument and challenge assumptions
Formulate hypotheses and research questions, undertake data collection, and make academic arguments
Identify appropriate data sources and information resources
Instil appropriate academic conduct (e.g. avoiding unacceptable practice)
Interpret and use data
Demonstrate basic computer literacy
Brief description
This module will provide students with small group tutorials that will enable them to develop key skills in academic writing, critical thinking, data handling and communication using equine exercise physiology as a specialism. It will enable students to describe the effects of exercise and training through a series of lectures, tutorials, practical's, workshops and e-learning. It will also investigate the design of appropriate fitness regimes with due regard for the adaptive responses required for different activities and introduce diseases and/or injuries that limit performance.
Aims
The module aims to introduce students to best academic practice and enhance their academic skill set. Through personal tutorials, formal lectures, e learning, practical classes and workshops, this module will enable students to develop these skills in relation to the effects of exercise and training in equine physiology.
Content
Small group tutorials will continue across the two semesters as well as formal lectures and e learning resources. A variety of practical exercises may be included, for example, determination of the fitness of different horses using recovery heart rates, and/or dissection of selected organs to evaluate anatomy and physiology from an exercise perspective.
Module Skills
Skills Type | Skills details |
---|---|
Application of Number | Data handling will be a part of the module coursework |
Communication | Writing skills will be developed and assessed through the essay writing assignment with feedback given during tutorials. Students will develop their writing style and dissect relevant research papers from the scientific literature. Students will also develop oral communication skills by coordinating activities with others and presenting data. |
Improving own Learning and Performance | Feedback will be given during tutorials on essay writing styles, handling data and presentation skills |
Information Technology | Coursework will be word processed, practical to collect equine heart rate data will require analysis using MS Excel. Assessed by presentation of assignment and feedback given. Students will have practice handling data sets and learn basic data presentation in R. |
Personal Development and Career planning | Understanding of how scientific skills can be used in the real world application |
Problem solving | Students will work together during project work to problem solve |
Research skills | Coursework essay and information gathered in the project report is required to be fully referenced from a range of published sources, developing skills of research, in terms of utilizing databases and search engines and subsequent selection of appropriate material. Assessed in the assignment and feedback given. |
Subject Specific Skills | The ability to evaluate the potential performance of a given horse |
Team work | The incorporation of an element of group work during practical classes will develop students' ability to work as a team and during oral presentations. |
