Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Consider the implications of the expanding `information society'

Explain the impact of Information and Communication Technologies in the provision of information and library services, and the development of the electronic/digital library

Seek information using a range of information resources

Give an account of the development of the main types of libraries/information services in the UK

Distinguish the related issues of intellectual freedom and freedom of
information

Discuss the ethical, legal, and social factors affecting the flow of
information

Identify areas of information deprivation

Brief description

Constantly we are being told that ours is an `information age and that we are living in an `information society, but what exactly do these terms mean? How has society, at local, national, and international level, changed as a result of the advent of computers and the impact of information and communications technology (ICT)? The aim of this module is to discuss these issues and many others; issues which are relevant to us all, not just as members of the information profession, but also as private citizens.

Content

This module is divided into two parts:

The first three units introduce you to information society concepts, developments in electronic and digital information, and the role and development of libraries in society.

The rest of the module is taken up with examining the impact of information within society, considering developments in digital technology within social and political, as well as historical, contexts

Co-ordinating with others Group work exercises during study school, plus many discussion activities for learners to contribute with.
Creative Problem Solving Exercises and content enable the student to assess and debate the impact of changing legislation on professional practice (e.g. Freedom of Information & Censorship) and apply solutions to real-life workplace practice.
Critical and analytical thinking Analysing data and tables from searches of UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics (UIS) Data for the Sustainable Development Goals and other sources such as Internet World Statistics
Digital capability Integral to subject of ‘information and society’, exploring and reviewing range of IT, ICT, and digital information sources – and services. Hands-on practical exercises using range of electronic information sources to seek and evaluate information
Professional communication Academic communications skills in written assignments.
Real world sense Exercises in the content and the assignment equip the students to put theory into practice in their work environment.
Reflection Exercises in the content and the assignment equip the students to put theory into practice in their work environment
Subject Specific Skills Hands-on practical exercises using range of information sources to seek and evaluate information. Review of electronic and digital information resources and developments.
