Brief description

Based on self-directed projects, individual and group tutorials, this module is intended for second year students who have already chosen painting as one of their main options. There is a concentration on the analysis of appropriate subject matter together with drawing and painting. Students are encouraged to engage with painting in its broadest capacity, experiment and contextualise their interests within an individual approach. The portfolios created for this module may be a development from the work made in modules painting 1 or painting 2, or entirely new bodies of work.

Aims

• Further develop self-directed portfolios.
• Develop previous interests or initiate new subject matter and content
• Further build upon technical knowledge and approaches relevant to the students’ intentions
• Encourage experimentation and risk-taking in the setting of self-initiated problems and use of media within painting.
• Develop the student’s ability to articulate and discuss the above in a reasoned, critical or thought-provoking manner
• Encourage students to contextualise their work in relation to past and present art and ideas
• Fully engage with workshops, group work and tutorials together with overall learning relevant to the context of painting.

Content

Painting 4 module runs in conjunction with painting 3 and includes tutorials, group crits, workshops and independent studio time. This is embedded to support students to develop a portfolio of paintings, drawings and experimental works. The workshops support both technical and conceptual understanding of painting both within a traditional historical context and within current contemporary discourse.
