Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Initiate a subject matter which could be further developed by the student
Use a broader technical vocabulary relevant to the students’ own subject matter
Demonstrate an awareness of the wider context of art practice in relation to their work
Use various painting strategies and critical and evaluative tools
Demonstrate a capacity for self-directed study
Brief description
Based on projects and individual tutorials, this module is intended for second year students who have chosen painting as one of their main options. Self-directed study is central and includes the ability to initiate and develop ideas relevant within historical and contemporary painting discourse. Two portfolios of painting are expected which focus on practical output and research within the context of historical and contemporary painting and which relates to students’ own interests.
Aims
• initiate a consideration of subject matter and content in relation to the personality of the student
• further technical knowledge and competence relevant to the students’ intentions
• encourage experimentation and risk-taking in the setting of problems and use of the medium
• develop the student’s ability to articulate and discuss the above in a reasoned, critical or thought-provoking manner
• encourage students to contextualise their work in relation to past and present art and ideas
• Fully engage with workshops, group cohesion and learning.
Content
Within the studios provided, at the School of Art, students should develop an independent portfolio of work. The context of this portfolio will develop from participation in workshops and tutorials and presence in the studio. Painting is explored both technically and conceptually as a group, which supports the self-directed portfolios. Each student is encouraged to independently explore historical and contemporary painting, both practically and academically, making use of the library, studio and workshops. Tutors are present to support and direct the student's portfolio development.
