Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Assess the role of science and technology in the workplace and evaluate its relevance to a future career.
Identify and discuss the application of scientific principles and data to a series of on farm problems.
Evaluate the nutritional properties of feedstuffs and formulate rations for farm livestock.
Brief description
The module will identify examples of how technology can be used to aid decision making within agricultural production systems.
Content
General principles relating to farm animal feeds, feed analysis, digestive anatomy, the control of appetite, and energy, protein, mineral and vitamin nutrition. The requirements of selected examples of farm livestock for energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, the rationing of feeds, and nutritional disorders will be discussed.
The module will also focus on tools to establish suitable levels of inputs and approaches to quantify productivity and yields on farms. Subjects covered here may include examples from both precision crop and livestock production systems.
