Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Recognise, understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases concerning themselves, their friends, their family and their immediate, concrete surroundings.

2. Recognise, understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases to achieve/satisfy basic needs of a concrete type.

3. Ask and answer simple questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.

4. Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.

5. Interact in a simple way with others, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

6. Write short texts describing themselves, where they live and people they know.

7. Write short, simple texts such as postcards, sending holiday greetings, or leaflets, describing their region.

8. Complete forms with correct and appropriate personal details, such as registration forms.

9. Translate short texts from German into English and from English into German.

10. Display proficiency in basic German grammar and syntax, appropriate to level A1 of the ECFR.

11. Make both supervised and independent use of the facilities available in the Department and Library, including the language laboratory.

Brief description

This course is an intensive introduction to the German language. It is aimed at students with little or no previous knowledge of German and will cover material from level A1 of the European Common Framework of Reference for Languages (ECFR). Students will achieve A1 proficiency by the end of the module.

Content

Students will cover material appropriate to level A1 of the ECFR. This will include being able to express information about: Basic personal details (name, age, profession, birthday, etc…); family members; physical characteristics and personality; days of the week; months of the year; numbers; colours; likes and dislikes; everyday activities; frequency; asking for & following directions; transport; where you live; food cultures; urban environments; travel and holidays; what happened recently; clothes; daily routine; weather; giving advice; making suggestions; talking about plans; hobbies and pastimes; house, rooms, garden, pets.
