Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Identify the requirements of the LCA Interpretation phase and the challenges associated with it

Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical knowledge underpinning the evaluation of LCA reports

Brief description

This module provides an overview of Life Cycle Impact Assessments (LCIA) and their Interpretation as well as giving students real life LCA case studies to evaluate. Students will explore the processes of LCIA and assess the challenges associated with them before evaluating the use of normalisation and weighting in LCIA and examining the requirements of the LCA Interpretation phase and the challenges associated with Interpretation. Real life LCA Case Studies will be made available for evaluation and students will compare options for simplifying LCA studies

Content

Through a series of online lectures, guided reading and quizzes, students will explore:
LCIA and Interpretation -
• Describe the processes of LCIA and assess the challenges associated with them
• Critically evaluate the use of normalisation and weighting in LCIA
• Describe the requirements of the LCA Interpretation phase and assess the challenges associated with Interpretation

Evaluating LCA Case Studies-
• Compare options for simplifying LCA studies
• Apply theoretical knowledge of LCA methods to evaluating LCA reports
• Compare LCA studies and assess their strengths and weaknesses

Learning will be tested with formative quizzes and by a summative masters level quiz at the end of the module
