Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Identify key components of: Experimental Design, Trait Measurement & Resource Management
Analyse data for the purposes of selection
Demonstrate an understanding of the plant variety commercialisation pathway in the UK.
Brief description
This 3rd short module in the Plant Breeding set provides the knowledge that you will need to design, plan and set up a plant breeding programme. The module begins with Experimental Design, Trait Measurement & Resource Management before looking in detail at routes to commercialising a new variety.
Content
Experimental Design, Trait Measurement & Resource Management
. Design and plan a nursery or field trial for the purposes of selection.
• Prepare for times of peak activity in a breeding program and manage resources accordingly.
• Analyse data for the purposes of selection
Commercialisation
• Describe the process of commercialising a crop variety in the UK, and compare systems between countries.
• Schedule the process of product (variety) development as an outcome from a breeding program, including the land/capital requirement for production of foundation seed/plant material.
• Propose how your variety is to be marketed/disseminated to farmers, including how a royalty will be collected.
• If a new breeding program is in development, propose a short medium and long term plan for variety production and marketing.
Learning will be tested with formative quizzes and by a summative masters level quiz at the end of the module
