Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand and identify key principles and characteristics of plant biology

Explain plant biology principles can be applied to controlled environments

Identify drivers of plant stress and the mechanisms evolved to counter stress

Propose ways in which a controlled environment can be modified to promote certain stress responses

Brief description

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is a technology-based approach to food production, allowing growers/food producers and agri-tech businesses to optimise growing conditions and resource usage. CEA has the potential to increase business resilience and food security in the face of factors such as climate change and land availability. This module introduces students to plant biology and looks at how general plant biology principles can be applied to controlled environments.

Content

Through a series of online lectures, guided reading and quizzes, students will look at:
Plant Biology
• Key principles of plant biology
• Characteristics of plant physiology
• Explore how general plant biology principles can be applied to controlled environments
• The nature of plants to the specific constraints of CEA systems.

Plant stress: optimising produce for human nutrition/high value metabolites
• Key drivers of plant stress
• Mechanisms that plants have evolved to counter stress
• Ways in which a controlled environment can be modified to promote certain stress responses
Learning will be tested with formative quizzes and by a summative masters level quiz at the end of the module

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Critical and analytical thinking The MCQ exam will pose questions that present theoretical problems for the students to solve.
Digital capability Students will be required to examine and synthesize quantitative data from a range of publications and databases to develop answers for their MCQ exam
Subject Specific Skills Students will be asked to propose ways in which a controlled environment can be modified to promote certain stress responses
