Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Understand an overview of Tourism, its importance to the economy and the issues / challenges it faces
Understand and be able to practice basic level maths and statistics such as mean, median, mode; correlations between phenomena; calculating percentages; ratios and ordinary maths functions.
Understand the decisions needing to be made by tourism organisations (national tourist boards and tourism businesses), the information needed to inform the answers to these decisions and the tools and techniques available
Be able to apply basic maths and stats functions (in LO 2) in a business/tourism environment to enable successful decision making processes.
Brief description
This module gives an overview of the Tourism discipline, its importance to the economy and the issues it faces. Furthermore the module delivers an overview of basic numerical approaches to support business decisions. Both areas are then brought together and the numerical approaches are applied to Tourism examples (mainly using excel) to allow students real life cases to aid their learning and appreciation of the use of number in a business setting.
Aims
The module aims to equip students with a business based knowledge of the basic numerical approaches used in business decision making, in tandem with improving students' understanding of tourism as an industry sector.
Content
The first third of the module will cover an introduction and overview of tourism, its importance to the economy and the issues it faces. The middle third will cover an introduction and overview of business level mathematics and statistics. The exact detail will depend on the needs of the class but are likely to include a recap of basic maths functions; calculating percentages; mean, median and mode; ratios and correlations between 2 or more phenomena. The final third will pull tourism and the numerical approaches together applied to decision making through case studies and real life scenarios. This is through a mix of lectures and seminars which will include group exercises as well as individual work.
