Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the nature of the early Welsh narrative tradition.

2. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the make-up of the Four Branches and other ‘Mabinogion’ tales.

3. Demonstrate a specialist knowledge of traditional and more contemporary views as to the stylistic and thematic features of the texts.

4. Develop a mastery of the fundamentals of Middle Welsh grammar and syntax.

Brief description

Studying and reading texts from the ‘Mabinogion’. We will read extracts in the original, and discuss critically their content and background.

Content

A series of 10 lectures on the content and background of the native tales + 10 textual sessions to read extracts
