Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Describe the physiology and anatomy (both gross- and ultrastructural-) of the various tissues of the musculoskeletal system and the adaptations in the common domestic species.

Describe the biology of common musculoskeletal injuries and diseases and methods treatment under examination conditions.

Discuss the normal developmental and adult anatomy of the heart, great vessels and respiratory system in the common domestic species.

Show understanding of the main functions of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and the regulatory systems that interact with these systems

Brief description

This module builds upon the basic anatomical and functional understanding covered in your first year and explores the normal function of animal systems in more depth, whilst transitioning into examining diseases of the Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Locomotor systems and appropriate treatments. This module will also address the linkages between these critical systems and the rest of the body.
Consisting of the related “Cardiovascular and Respiratory” strand and the “Locomotor” strand, these strands are designed to be delivered throughout the BVSc course.

Content

Combining practical anatomy classes with lectures and small group teaching, this module examines in greater depth the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and locomotor systems and introduces key injuries and diseases.
The relevance of understanding normal functions of these systems will be illustrated by reference to the signs and effects of disease. Within the cardiovascular and respiratory topics, you will gain an understanding of cardiovascular development, heart & lung function and assessing the function of these organs. Whilst in the locomotor section, areas such as fracture healing, bone diseases and lameness in livestock will be explored and synthesized with deeper anatomical understanding. Throughout, linkages between these systems and others will be explored to provide an multi-faceted appreciation of how body systems function as a whole.

	Outside the formal contact hours, students will be expected to research materials, manage time and meet deadlines for the coursework and exam. This aspect is not assessed.
	The exam will require students to research topics beyond the depth and scope of the lecture material. Information from a variety of sources will be used. Research skills will be assessed in the examination.
	Small group learning will encourage students to communicate, assess and present information as a team. This aspect is not assessed.
	During the module, students will gain knowledge of veterinary terminology and anatomical locations assessed in exams.
	Accessing the web for reliable information sources and using databases to find literature in preparation for the coursework and the exam. These will not be directed assessed.
	Students will develop effective written communication skills in the examination, where these will be assessed. Feedback for this will be offered.
	Students will have contact with veterinary surgeons and biology researchers providing insight into these sectors. This aspect is not assessed.
	Small group learning/Practical classes and exams will involve problem solving.
