On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

​1. Discuss the nature of archives and records with reference to appropriate critics and critical paradigms.

2. Analyse the impact of social, political, cultural, and technological developments on the recordkeeping environment.

3. Evaluate the role of the legal and regulatory framework in which archives and records operate.

4. Critically examine the role and responsibilities of the recordkeeping professional.

5. Discuss the role and application of professional codes of conduct.

Brief description

This module introduces students to a range of core concepts around the nature, use, and role of archives and records for individuals, organizations, and society. It explores the place of recordkeeping in the broader information field and the social, economic, political, and technological environment in which it operates. Students will be introduced to the role of the records professional and the administrative, legal, regulatory, and ethical frameworks within which they work.

Content

Key content and themes for this module include:

The nature of archives and records
Examining the changing definitions of archives and records and the factors which have occasioned those changes, and the relationship of archives and records within the information sector, and different models of recordkeeping.

Recordkeeping contexts and responsibilities
Exploring the historical, evidential, legal, and cultural role of archives and records for individuals, organizations, and society, and the changing perceptions of the role of the recordkeeper, including professional standards of conduct.

The recordkeeping environment
Discussion of the regulatory and legislative environment for recordkeeping and the impact of these for managing archives and records.

Appraising records and archives
Explores the theories, function, and challenges of appraisal in the recordkeeping environment, and examines why it is such a significant activity.

Drivers for recordkeeping
An examination of the current political, economic, social, and technological factors driving recordkeeping and how the profession is responding.
