Brief description

This module aims to provide training in environmental auditing and professional skills (including project management, work scheduling, meeting objectives and deadlines, budgeting and record keeping) that will maximize employability in the environment sector. Central to its aims are to develop effective communication (oral presentation and report writing) and team working skills addressed in the context of problem-centred case studies. Environmental Auditing will provide the opportunity to engage with a professional environment practitioner. Employability skills will also be developed through job application exercises.

This module will also address issues such as project management (work scheduling, setting objectives and deadlines, budgeting and record keeping)

Aims

To improve student employability by providing training in key topics valued in the environment sector and by developing their presentational skills.

Content

This module consists of three elements. Firstly, a series of seminars will be given covering environmental auditing procedures as applied to several real world scenarios. Secondly, group case study exercises will be undertaken where students will address specific environmental management problems. Introductory sessions will outline the purpose and delivery of this element of the module, emphasising good group working practices (e.g. allocation of specified roles, minuting of case study meetings). The students will then engage with individual members of staff acting as the client for each case study. Students will be guided in the delivery of group presentations and reports. In the final element of the module, aimed at improving employability, individual students will engage in an application and interview process for specified positions within the environmental management sector.
