Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of the inter-disciplinary nature of motor control

Demonstrate advanced level knowledge of theories and principles the area of motor control, motor learning, and performance.

Construct critical reviews on a range of topics based on a range of information sources

Process, analyze and interpret data.

Brief description

This module will focus on the principles of human skilled performance and the principles of skill learning. Decision making, anticipation, attention and information processing are discussed in relation to the execution of movements. The sensory system, the involvement of the brain and feedback loops and theories of motor programs will enable the student to understand the theory behind the motor control. The application will focus on the speed-accuracy trade off and individual differences in capacity for learning. Skill learning will focus on the research methods applied
in motor learning and how expertise is gained, including the effect of practice and feedback.

Content

Indicative content and structure will contain:
• Introduction to Motor Skills
• Processing information and making decisions
• Attention and performance
• Sensory contribution to skilled performance
• Motor programs
• Principles of speed, accuracy and coordination
• Motor Learning
• Skill acquisition, retention and transfer
• Organizing and scheduling practice
• Augmented feedback

Aims
