Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
hold a simple conversation in Irish making use of the above-mentioned grammatical and syntactical points at a level approximate to ability Level A1 of the Common European Framework for Language Learning
use the noun in the genitive case
use the personal forms of the preposition
use the verb ‘to be’ in the habitual, future, and conditional tenses
use the regular and irregular verbs in the present habitual, future, and conditional tenses
display some familiarity with contemporary Gaeltacht culture
Brief description
This module, along with IR10620, provides an introduction to the basic structure of the Irish language and expanding the student’s knowledge of spoken and written Irish, as well as contemporary Irish-language culture.
Weekly lessons will focus on specific topics, gradually introducing and consolidating key grammatical structures and concepts.
Upon finishing this module the student can expect to attain competence approximating to level A1 of the European Common Framework for Language Learning.

Week 1: Revision of basic structures and vocabulary
Week 2: Possession; genitive constructions
Week 3: The family; the present habitual tense
Week 4: Likes and dislikes; copula constructions
Week 5: Hobbies and past-times; verbal noun constructions
Week 6: Making plans; the future tense
Week 7: Conditional mood
Week 8: Reading of short text
Week 9: Reading of short text
Week 10: Seáinín Smaoiseach; contemporary Gaeltacht culture
