On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Students will develop a critical understanding of the development of teaching methodologies.
Students will engage critically with theoretical perspectives informing methodology.
Students will critically examine specific educational contexts and the teaching methodologies employed.
Brief description
The module examines teaching methodologies initially from a historical perspective in order to explore their relationship to context. A range of global contexts will be examined to explore the ways in which social, political and historical contexts influence methodology.
Aims
The module will present a critical examination of teaching methodologies and their contexts.
Content
Session 1. Teaching in time (methodologies up to 18th century in Europe).
Session 2. Education for the Industrial World (19th/20th century)
Session 3. Challenges to the Transmission Model
Session 4. Education for the Information Age (late 20th century)
Session 5. Current theoretical perspectives
Session 6/7 Global Contexts and Methodologies (influence of context on methodology)
Session 8/9 Innovative Methodologies (response of educators to context)
Session 10. Reading the future
Seminars
Weeks 1-5 Exploration of context, methodologies making connections with current practice.
Weeks 6-9 Case studies of various contexts exploring the methodologies in use. Students will prepare and present case studies to the seminar in pairs or groups.
