Brief description
The dissertation is an important element of the School's Specialist Masters programmes. It provides an opportunity for Specialist Masters students to undertake a piece of in-depth research into a selected topic. Students will be assigned an individual supervisor who will assist the student within the general framework and limits operated for postgraduate dissertations within the School. Dissertations will be expected to show evidence of an appropriate range of reading, which complements the original research content.
Aims
The aim of the Dissertation is to assess a student's aility to identify, collect and analyse a body of material, organise it, and write it up in a manner that sustains a persuasive argument. The work must demonstrate a strong capacity for independent thought and critical analysis.
Content
Dissertations should be 12,000 - 15,000 words in length.
An induction meeting is held for all Specialist Masters students to explain the expectations of them, the dissertation structure and the parameters for supervision.
