Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Describe the physiology of exercise and training
2. Investigate the selection and training of the equine athlete
3. Recognise how the equine athlete can compete safely under differing conditions
Brief description
This module will enable students to describe the effects of exercise and training upon specific body systems and in the successful management of the performance horse. It will also investigate the design of appropriate fitness regimes with due regard for the adaptive responses required for different activities and introduce diseases and/or injuries that limit performance.
Content
The module will cover selection of equine athletes, the principles of training and the effects of exercise, training and fatigue on specific body systems as well as causes of poor performance.
A variety of practical exercises may be included, for example, determination of the fitness of different horses using recovery heart rates, and/or dissection of selected organs to evaluate anatomy and physiology from an exercise perspective.

Module Skills
Skills Type | Skills details |
---|---|
Application of Number | |
Communication | Writing skills will be developed and assessed through the examination and assignment with feedback given in the assignment. |
Improving own Learning and Performance | Detailed, written, feedback will be given on the assignment. Two ‘practice’ tests will be given to aid revision during the course |
Information Technology | Coursework will be word processed, practical to collect equine heart rate data will require analysis using MS Excel. Assessed by presentation of assignment and feedback given. |
Personal Development and Career planning | |
Problem solving | |
Research skills | Coursework essay is required to be fully referenced from a range of published sources, developing skills of research, in terms of utilizing databases and search engines and subsequent selection of appropriate material. Assessed in the assignment and feedback given. |
Subject Specific Skills | The ability to evaluate the potential performance of a given horse |
Team work | The incorporation of an element of group work during practical classes will develop students' ability to work as a team |
