Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. to demonstrate advanced understanding of the complex strategies and techniques involved in making contemporary theatre and performance
2. to take responsibility for putting into operation, in an ordered and meaningful way, the methodological and representational principles studied
3. to display an ability to work effectively and co-operatively in a collaborative project, including in a leadership capacity
4. to employ advanced skills in conducting well-informed independent research and creative practice
5. to evaluate critically complex strategies and techniques of composition, structuring and staging, leading to the creation of a group practical presentation
Aims
a) to introduce and explore a range of conceptual, compositional and practical strategies and methodologies for making contemporary theatre and performance
b) to provide a secure grounding in the practice of contemporary performance and in a range of theatre-making methodologies
c) to provide opportunities to participate in and reflect upon the conceptual and compositional strategies and techniques examined
d) to encourage and enable the conceptualisation, development and presentation of theatre and performance projects

1. Making theatre and performance: practices, practitioners, procedures
2. Dramaturgy: text, narrative, units and sequencing of action
3. Scene: place, scenography, mise-en-scene
4. Space: site, location, journey
5. Figure: character, performer, ensemble
6. Movement: choreography, physicality, modulation
7. Voice: speech, song, `authenticity?
8. Sound: environment, language, listening
9. Media: mediation, intermediality, distanciation
10. Audience: participation, engagement, relationality
