Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to conceive of, plan and critically contextualize an original piece of research.
2. Critically review a key research souce, assessing its potential use and critical context.
3. Devise a bibliography of appropriate texts and a relevant re4search question.
4. Effectively present research findings through essay writing.
5. Effectively present research finding through oral assessment and responding to questions.
Brief description
The module will provide students with expert guidance in their chosen area of research, giving them the opportunity to devise a research topic with a specialist member of staff and to receive regular feedback on the development of assessed work.
Aims
This module will give students the opportunity to pursue their area of interest with a specialist in the field and prepare them for the independent study required by the Dissertation. For their Dissertation itself, students may continue with the broad subject area of their guided essay. The material must be a development and must not therefore be a repetition of material already discussed in the Guided Research module. Relevant research training that will aid students in their work for Guided Research will be provided by our first semester core ENM0120 Research Skills.
Content
Weeks one and two:
Discussion with tutor to determine the specific subject area to be pursued and to compile a bibliography of relevant texts.
Week three:
Define project area.
Weeks four, five and six:
Conduct independent research, guided by tutor, the development of which to be discussed in tutorials. In week five, define specific research question.
Week seven:
Assessed oral presentation. Review of a key research source presented the tutor and additional member of staff. The student will take questions on the material.
Weeks eight, nine and ten:
Discussion of work in progress with tutor.
ESTIMATED WORKLOAD HOURS: Tutorials 10 hours / Research: 300hours / Essay Writing: 175 hours
