Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Illustrate the basic theory of quantization of fields;
2. Define basic notions from quantum theory and recognize their occurrence and relevance in applied problems;
3. Solve specific problems from mathematical physics formulated in the appropriate theoretical terms;
4. Perform algebraic and analytic computations relevant to modeling quantum open systems.
5. Identify applications to quantum optics and modern quantum technologies
Aims
New MPhys module introducing the theory and methods behind quantum optics, with applications to modern quantum technologies. The module treats topics not covered in other Welsh Universities and reflects specific research expertise
Brief description
Modern quantum theory requires concepts and techniques going beyond traditional techniques encountered in standard textbooks. A proper understanding of these principles involves operator theoretic concepts, which will be presented in the module. The motivation is a description of open quantum systems.
Content
1. Von Neumann-Luders projection postulate,
2. Von Neumann's model of indirect measurement.
BOSON STATISTICS
1. Creation and annihilation operators, canonical commutation relations, coherent states. Wick ordering; Poisson, Gaussian and Geometric distributions; Wick's theorem.
QUANTIZATION OF THE ELECTRO-MAGNETIC FIELD
1. Quantizing an LC circuit with source
2. Quantizing the EM field (oscillator mode representation).
