Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Negotiate and secure a valid work placement
(a) Determine personal objectives for the placement
(b) Demonstrate initiative in selecting and securing relevant employment
(c) Respond to the demands of preparing for and attending an interview
(d) Negotiate and agree an action plan with the supervisor and employer
2. Demonstrate an ability to fulfil a working role
(a) Sustain the placement for the required period of time
(b) Complete a programme of tasks to an agreed standard
(c) Work responsibly alone and with others
3. Analyse the activities and performance of the organisation
(a) Review and evaluate the organisation, its structure and use of available resources
(b) Assess its effectiveness in achieving its aims in relation to recognised standards
4. Assess the value and relevance of the work experience gained
(a) Evaluate the experience gained against the action plan
(b) Assess the contribution of this experience to career development
(c) Identify personal skills development
(d) Analyse the contribution to career development
Aims
The module requires you to undertake a period of work experience of at least 6 weeks, normally during the long vacation prior to the start of Part 2 (this usually means between the first and second year), within an organisation that will provide you with experience relevant to your degree scheme.
BEFORE REGISTERING ON THE MODULE, THE WORK EXPERIENCE PROPOSAL MUST BE APPROVED BY THE WORK EXPERIENCE CO-ORDINATOR AND YOUR DEGREE SCHEME CO-ORDINATOR. Instructions and guidance notes will be issued by the Work Experience Co-ordinator.
NB
(i) The Institute reserves the right to preclude students from registering on this module if their academic performance has been unsatisfactory.
(ii) Students seeking to change their registration from this module to another at the start of the session would be permitted to do so only when the placement had been unsuccessful through no fault of their own. Such cases would need the approval of the Dean.
