On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
* Explain how content management systems operate
* Propose appropriate content management solutions for various purposes (intranets, and extranets)
* Discuss how knowledge management might be supported through various intranet technologies
* Discuss the legal and ethical issues involved in electronic publishing on intranets and extranets
* Outline how a Web-based service will impact on various types of user
* Explain how evaluation of the service (e.g. through logging, and traffic analysis) can inform strategic planning
* Explain and evaluate technical solutions for intranets, extranets, and knowledge management systems
Brief description
The module is intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for content management of intranets, knowledge management systems, and other web-based information services.
Content
The following topics will be covered:Web-based technologies (e.g. wired and wireless internet protocol-based technologies). Content management systems. Information architecture; Enterprise systems: intranets and extranets: access; control and security, authentication, encryption, intellectual property rights. Logging and traffic analysis. Impact of the networked economy on the individual, the organisation and the regional and national economy.
