Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an effective knowledge and understanding of how cultural diversity and race equality impact on education in contemporary Britain.
Critically evaluate ideological arguments about cultural diversity and race equality in society and education.
Demonstrate an ability to form coherent arguments based on sourced evidence in discussing issues of cultural diversity and race equality.
Appreciate the need to show respect for and understanding of others in a culturally diverse society whilst challenging inequality.
Demonstrate effective skills of written and oral communication in a range of different situations.
Brief description
- deepen students' understanding of cultural diversity and race equality in British society;
- consider the implications of cultural diversity and race equality for the education of all children and young people in schools;
- examine the theories and practices underpinning education policies in a culturally diverse society.
Content
Lectures are based on the following topics:
- Patterns of migration and Britain as a multicultural society
- Notions of identity in diverse societies
- Psychological, philosophical, and sociological perspectives on multiculturalism
- Public and governmental responses to multiethnic, multicultural Britain
- Ethnicity and achievement
- Educational responses to ethnic and cultural diversity
- Race equality and racism
- Bilingualism and learning additional languages
- Preparing all pupils for life in a multicultural society
- Developing a culturally diverse curriculum
- Personal experiences of ethnic and cultural diversity
- Debates about the policy of multiculturalism
- Analysing bias in the media
- The relevance of education for diversity and equality in different kinds of school
- The attainments of pupils from specific minority ethnic groupings
- Personal experiences of racism
- Monolingual or bilingual education and school language policies
- How education for cultural diversity and race equality impacts on key areas of school operations
- The representation of diverse identities in the curriculum
- Integrating cultural diversity into the curriculum
