Bing-Bong! How hangs it...?Actually, forget I asked that!!! As it may be obvious by now, I am the latest CompSoc President. Picture of me and my sister (I'm the one on the left!) :- And this is the love of my life, Willow! (Alyson Hannigan!) Hmmm, nice. :-
Anyway, back to sanity! (or as near as I can get) As the president it's my job to get students in the department involved in non-academic activities (Drinking) as well as providing them with additional things to do such as trips to Birmingham, Dublin or wherever we eventually decide! About me:-You can get more on me from my website ( http://users.aber.ac.uk/aff9 ) but the basics are as follows. I originate from Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire where I studied first at Frederick Gough School then John Leggott College. I gained loadsa GCSE's and 3 'A' levels (Maths-A, Physics-B, Further Maths-C). My ambition is to be a Fast Jet pilot in the Royal Air Force and has been for years. You may be wondering why I'm doing a Computer Science Degree and why at Aber' ? Well, firstly I've been surrounded by computers for longer than I care to remember! I've been programming since I gained my Computer badge in Cub Scouts (OK, I'm officially a nerd, like I care!!!). I decided to do a degree as the recent situation in the forces with defence cuts etc. mean the job isn't as safe as it used to be. I chose Computer Science as I enjoy working with computers and programming and wouldn't mind too much to have a related career. The reason I chose Aberystwyth is slightly more complex. One day after being bullied by my tutor at college I finally decided to choose which Uni' I went to for three years. So I picked up the UCAS handbook and wrote down all the Universities that had a computer science degree scheme. I then removed all Universities in Smoggy cities (Scunthorpe's bad enough, and we only have 60 000 'ish people!) Then took out all the De Montfort Universities (I just don't like them!) then removed all universities within 100 miles of Scunthorpe, to prevent frequent parental "day trips". Then I removed the ones in places I didn't like, Southampton for starters! (no offence!) This left me with 5 Universities; Dundee, Edinburgh, Loughborough, Aberystwyth and somewhere else that wasn't important! I then received all the info from these universities. Edinburgh and Dundee had degree schemes involving a lot of playing with the insides of a computer, strange people. So I then decided to visit Loughborough and Aber' . Loughborough had a good reputation and I wasn't disappointed with the Campus. Very large with loadsa places to eat plates of Cow and drink vast amounts of alcohol! Perfect!.. Then came the visit to the computer science department. Which wasn't at all impressive. It consisted of "here's a computer lab", "here's some really old computers that we don't want anymore" and of course "here's where we play about with the insides of computers" Arrrgggghhhh!!! But they did do a lot of C++ programming, so I thought I would probably go there. then came the visit to Aber'. Whilst at Aber' I was constantly shown round by first years, extremely impressed with the computer science systems and the degree scheme (Hmmm, java and C!!!) everything was set up for our visit including accommodation, a tour, the obligatory informal interview and finally the hands on! hoorah! Somewhere that thinks you might actually want to use the computers, bizarre!?! So that was it, Aber' it was. Sure it has it's faults but everywhere has. Anyway, Aber's got a beach and is in Wales (big hills!) what more could a man want!!! So, here I am in Aberystwyth doing a brilliant degree with loadsa cool people (and a few weirdo's, usually ex-girlfriend's etc.! But that's normal!) and this place is cool, about 57 licenced bars, pubs and clubs!!! Anyway, enough with boring you. if you want to get some more info on things then you can e-mail me at aff9@aber.ac.uk but don't send me junk, I'll just block all you're e-mails!!! Thanks! Adam. |
