In anticipation of getting to Aber, check out the essential tasks you will need to complete before arriving through a tailored checklist and some bitesized videos from our current students, along with some useful information before joining your new community.

The checklists and bitesized videos are designed to make each step of your journey joining Aberystwyth as smooth as possible.

Your AberAnticipation Pre-Arrival Checklist

There are certain things that we recommend you should do before you arrive at Aber so that you’re prepared and ready, and you’re then able to enjoy your first few weeks with us. Some of these tasks we deem are essential, and others are recommended.

Your Accommodation

Living in University Accommodation? Make sure you follow any pre-arrival instructions from our Accommodation Office and you can start applying in a few easy steps:

Activate your Aberystwyth University IT account

Check your personal email inbox after you’ve met all the conditions of your course. You will receive an email to activate and set up your university IT account.

Ensure you get disability and learning support if needed

If you face health barriers, please inform us beforehand and reach out if you have a disability, learning difficulty, long-term medical condition, or mental health condition. We provide advice and support during your studies and our Student Advisers can guide you on available support and adjustments. You can email: accessibility@aber.ac.uk before your arrival.

Apply and upload photo for your Aber Card

Your Aber Card provides access to library services, printing, campus buildings (including accommodation), and more. To ensure that your Aber Card is ready for you when you arrive on campus you will need to apply for it at least a week in advance.

Finish your University Accommodation Application

Remember to complete your accommodation application. Essential steps include understanding the accommodation occupation contract and arranging payment of fees; completing the induction programme; reading the residents’ handbook and connecting with flatmates before arriving if you wish.

Make sure to check and read your Welcome emails

Check your e-mails regularly which you receive from the University and remember to log in to your new Aberystwyth student e-mail account too. The e-mails will all have important information around your arrival that we need to share with you.

Organise your finances

Most new students are eligible for loans covering tuition fees and living costs. Apply for Student Finance promptly to receive necessary funding on time. If the Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees, check their payment process. For self-financed fees or external payments, refer to our guidance on how to pay.

Familiarise yourself with the Student Hub

The Student Hub is your online portal to make it easier for you to access the information and systems you need throughout your studies at Aberystwyth University.  It's a good idea to take some time to familiarise yourself with the Student Hub and all the tiles available to you.

Access the Online Student Induction

The University’s Online Student Induction provides useful information on what to expect at the University as well as guidance on various support that will be available to you whilst studying with us.

International Student?

Consider any English language support that you may need

Through the International English Centre, the University is able to comprehensively support the English language needs of all our international students.

Check that Vaccinations/Immunisations are up to date

We strongly advise to ensure both your Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) and Meningitis ACWY vaccinations are up to date before you begin University. If you haven’t received these yet, or unsure as to whether you have, we suggest discussing this with your doctor.

Complete pre-registration

Students who are starting a new course at Aberystwyth University take part in the pre-registration process in order to register their module choices for the forthcoming academic year. You will need to complete pre-registration before you arrive on campus if you can, and follow e-mails sent to you by our Student Admin Team.

Postgraduate Student?

Please note that this stage applies to Postgraduate Taught Students but is not relevant for Postgraduate Research Students.

Start Packing!

Deciding what to pack can be difficult, and remember that you can buy forgotten or non-essential items locally or online. Pack essential documents like your passport and any necessary prescriptions. If you’re staying in university accommodation, check what’s included in your room or flat below.
