Studying in Welsh

At Aberystwyth University, we offer many opportunities for students wishing to study through the medium of Welsh. Some courses can be followed entirely through the medium of Welsh, while others offer a mixture of Welsh-medium or bilingual modules and English-medium modules. Students can choose to submit their work and sit their exams in Welsh, and have a Welsh-speaking personal tutor.

Why study through the medium of Welsh?

Financial benefit

The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol offer a range of scholarships for students who study all or part of their course in Welsh. Students studying more than 5 credits in Welsh could also be eligible for our Welsh Medium Study Bursary.

Choice

The provision is flexible. Students can choose to study as many or as few of the Welsh-medium or bilingual modules that are available to them as they wish. Additional learning resources are available through the medium of Welsh via the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s digital library, including original textbooks, multimedia materials and apps. Many extra-curricular activities are offered through the medium of Welsh, including trips, conferences and workshops, which will enrich the learning experience.

Small class sizes

Our Welsh-medium modules tend to have smaller class sizes, benefitting students and often leading to a better learning experience.

Support

Study support, such as help with academic writing, is available to students studying through the medium of Welsh via workshops, one-to-one sessions and online resources.

Employability

Studying in both Welsh and English means you develop academic skills in both languages, improving your career prospects and attractiveness to employers based in Wales. 97.3% of Aberystwyth graduates who studied some part of their course through the medium of Welsh are in employment or further study six months after graduating (Graduate Outcomes Data, 2024).

University study is more than the formal learning on modules! There is a lively Welsh-language community at Aberystwyth University, and students can take advantage of opportunities to develop their skills by taking part in societies, clubs and voluntary work through the medium of Welsh.
