Mathematics

Mathematics is a living discipline that represents one of the supreme achievements of the human mind. Mathematics and Statistics underpin the modern world, including science, engineering and finance. Mathematicians are highly valued by employers across many job sectors for their logical and analytical thought processes, problem-solving abilities, data analysis and decision-making skills.

IMA
  • 2nd in the UK for Teaching Quality in Mathematics (Good University Guide 2024, The Times and Sunday Times)
  • Top in the UK for satisfaction with Feedback for the subject of Mathematics (Guardian University League Table 2024)
  • Top in the UK for Satisfaction with Teaching in Mathematics (The Guardian University League Table 2024)

Why study Mathematics at Aberystwyth University?

  • Our degrees are accredited by the IMA (Institute for Mathematics and its Applications), the UK's learned and professional society for mathematics, directly contributing to your recognition as a Chartered Mathematician.
  • Our flexible degree structures allow you to specialise in a particular area or study a broader range of topics within Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
  • You can choose to focus on particular uses of Mathematics in our bespoke degree schemes in Financial Mathematics, Mathematical and Theoretical Physics, and Data Science, which combines elements of Computer Science with Statistics.
  • Areas of mathematics and statistics in which we have particular expertise, and which often feature in our modules, include topology, operator algebras, spectral theory, the geometry of the complex plane, integral equations, asymptotic methods, quantum information and biological statistics.
  • The Department is a friendly, open and welcoming environment in which students can reach their full mathematical potential.
“There is never a boring topic and the course goes much deeper into mathematics than I was expecting. There are so many different modules to choose from that you will always find something to interest you. The lecturers are always willing to help.”
Elin Wyn Hughes Elin Wyn Hughes BSc Mathematics
“Maths is a great course with really friendly and approachable lecturers. The content is always really interesting, but challenging to the right extent. The whole department works effectively to offer all the facilities needed to gain a good degree.”
Jennifer O'Neil Jennifer O'Neil BSc Mathematics

Employability

A Mathematics degree will prepare you for a wide range of career destinations in which analytical and computational skills are especially valued. Areas include finance and banking, risk analysis, actuarial work, big data and statistical analysis.

Facilities

The Soft Matter Laboratory is an interdisciplinary facility, spanning experimental research from both the Mathematics and Physics departments, particularly in the areas of Foams, Soft Photonics, and Topology & Geometry in Condensed Matter.

Research

The Department’s research unites the three disciplines of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics (Mechanics) and Statistics. Our lecturers have expertise in subjects such as braid theory and operator algebras, quantum systems in interaction with their environment, mathematical and numerical modelling of solid and fluid mechanics, and statistics applied to biological datasets.

Our research focuses on:

  • mathematical modelling of structures, solids and fluids - covers diverse problems in solid and fluid mechanics and mathematical analysis
  • quantum structures, information and control - covers quantum systems in interaction with their environment, and in particular the emergent field of quantum control engineering
  • algebraic combinatorics - covers design theory, coding theory and the representation theory of Weyl groups and associated Hecke algebras
  • statistics - includes the application of statistics to biology and bioinformatics.

Study or Work Abroad
