1. The Pre-sessional English Refugee Scholarship is for 2024 Pre-Sessional entry only and cannot be deferred to a future year.
2. The Pre-sessional English Refugee Scholarship is for 6-week or 12-week Pre-sessional Courses only.
3. The Pre-sessional English Refugee Scholarship is for students preparing for degree level study or academia. It is not a general English course and is not open to applicants who do not have a goal of entering university.
4. First priority will be given to applicants who hold an undergraduate or postgraduate offer from Aberystwyth University for 2024 entry. Only after Aberystwyth applicants have been considered will applicants who hold a 2024-entry undergraduate or postgraduate offer from other universities, or other applicants, be considered.
5. Eligibility
The Aberystwyth Pre-sessional English Refugee Scholarship is for refugees or other sanctuary seeking students who:
a. have a conditional or unconditional offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree starting in September 2024 or January 2025 and
b. do not speak English as their first language and
c. meet the entry requirements for either the 6-week or 12-week Pre-sessional course and
d. either need a Pre-sessional Course to meet the English Language entry requirements of their undergraduate offer or do not have an English language condition in their undergraduate / postgraduate offer but are deemed by the International English Centre at Aberystwyth University to have a level of English that would allow them to benefit from a Pre-sessional Course
and
e. are entitled to financial support funded by the Student Finance Company for their undergraduate / postgraduate degree or are funding their own undergraduate / postgraduate degree from other sources (excluding the Aberystwyth Sanctuary Scholarship)
and
f. are assessed by the University’s Immigration & Compliance Team as a refugee or sanctuary seeker with the right to study in the UK.
6. Selection Process
a. This is a competitive process and not all applications will be successful.
b. Applications will be considered on the basis of eligibility (See 5 above), personal statements, references and suitability for the Pre-sessional Course.
c. First priority will be given to applicants who hold degree offers from Aberystwyth University.
d. All applications will be considered by a panel. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview.
e. The panel’s decision is final. There is no right of appeal. If your application is unsuccessful, you are welcome to apply again next year.
f. All applications received by the deadline will be considered. Applications received after the deadline will only be considered if not all Aberystwyth Pre-sessional English Refugee Scholarship places have been filled.
7. The Pre-sessional Course is a full-time, face to face course. 100% attendance is expected and a minimum of 80% attendance is a requirement of passing. You will need to be in Aberystwyth and available for fulltime study for the duration of the course.
8. Frequent absences from classes without reasonable excuse may lead to exclusion from the course and the withdrawal of scholarship benefits.
9. The Pre-sessional Course is an assessed course. Passes are awarded at three levels: Pass (equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no score below 5.5); Merit (equivalent to IELTS 6.5 with no score below 5.5) and Distinction (equivalent to IELTS 7.0 with no score below 5.5). Students who fail the course or who do not pass at the level required by their degree offer may not be able to use their course results to progress to a degree.
10. Aberystwyth University reserves the right to terminate scholarships and remove students from courses in the case of any disciplinary action being taken against an award holder. Disciplinary cases will be considered on an individual basis through the normal University process.
11. Aberystwyth University reserves the right to terminate scholarships and remove students from courses where it is found that they have presented fraudulent information about any aspect of their eligibility.
