Completing your Learning Agreement
By now you should have already started thinking about what modules (courses) you would like to study whilst at Aberystwyth University.
It can take some time to have your modules agreed by your home university and by Aberystwyth University, so it is best to get a head start.
The full list of modules (courses) is available here:
To find out more about the modules on offer at Aberystwyth University, and for help with completing your Learning Agreement, please read the below information carefully.
What is a Learning Agreement?
A Learning Agreement is an official document that agrees what modules (courses) you will study during your time studying at Aberystwyth University.
As the document must be agreed, and signed by yourself, your home university and by Aberystwyth University, it can take some time to complete, so it’s best to start it during the early stages of the application process.
If you are joining us as an Erasmus exchange student, you should ask your home university for a Learning Agreement template to fill in.
If you are joining us as an international exchange, study abroad or direct enrol student, you will need to fill in a Global Opportunities Learning Agreement.
Once you have discussed your modules with your home academic coordinator, and the Departmental Coordinator here at Aberystwyth and you have chosen your modules, you will then need to arrange to have your agreement signed by you, your home academic coordinator. Once it is signed, please send it to The Global Opportunities Team, and we will arrange to have it signed by your Departmental Coordinator.
Please note: Modules listed on your Learning Agreement are not guaranteed – you will still need to register on arrival and some modules may have changed from those listed on your agreement or timetable clashes may occur. You will be provided with guidance during registration if this is the case.
Who can I talk to about my Learning Agreement?
There may be specific modules your home university would like you to take, or specific departments you need to choose from. Your home study abroad team will be able to advise you on this in the first instance.
Once you have an idea of what modules you would like to study at Aberystwyth, you should contact your Departmental Coordinator to discuss the modules suitability.
Aberystwyth University has dedicated Departmental Coordinators from each academic department at the university that can help and advise you on suitable modules based on your academic needs and personal interests, and can help you understand module content, assessments and learning outcomes.
You can find details of who your Departmental Coordinator is, and how to contact them in your acceptance email.
If you would like to speak to one of our Departmental Coordinators prior to acceptance, please get in touch with the Global Opportunities Team and we can arrange this for you.
What modules can I study?
If you are joining us as an Erasmus exchange student, you will need to choose modules from the academic department partnered with your home university.
If you are joining us as an international exchange, study abroad or direct enrol student, you can choose modules from any of the academic departments at the university, as long as they are approved by the department.
Incoming students are advised to consider modules of an appropriate level to the year they are entering. For example, if you are entering Year 2, choose Part 2 modules.
It is the responsibility of your home institution to determine how many credits and modules are appropriate for conversion purposes.
Please take care to ensure that your chosen modules are taught in the semester you will be studying at Aberystwyth (Semester 1 or Semester 2).
Modules that are listed as having 00 credits are run over both semesters and would therefore be unsuitable if you are only studying at Aberystwyth for one semester. Where Pre-Requisite courses are listed for a module, you should contact the Departmental Coordinator to check the module suitability.
Please note: selecting modules from different study levels (Part 1 or Part 2), or from different departments will increase the likelihood of timetable clashes.
How do credits work?
Students are advised to take 60 Aberystwyth (AU) credits per semester and 120 AU credits per academic year. This is equivalent of 30 ECTS for a single semester and 60 ECTS for an academic year.
If applying for both semesters you can choose modules that give a 50/70 or 70/50 balance overall.
Module credits are indicated in the last two digits of the module code.
For example, AB051'20' - Foundations of Management and Marketing, is worth 20 AU credits (10 ECTS).
Modules that are listed as having ‘00’ or ‘30’ credits are run over both semesters and would therefore be unsuitable for students only studying at Aberystwyth for one semester.
Please note: selecting modules totalling over 60 credits will increase the likelihood of timetable clashes.
