In addition to remembering to email your mentees at least once a month (to see if they want a meeting) here is a typical timeline of key events throughout the year for Signpost Mentoring:

August

Allocations begin for new students arriving in September

September

Signpost mentors training and induction day
Freshers week
New students arrive
Send initial contact emails

October

Send reminder emails
First few weeks can be difficult with mass emails
Signpost mentors catch-up session

November

First assignments due
Keep checking by email to see if meetings are wanted
Optional additional training session for signpost mentors

December

Check with your mentees as this may be their first time back home
Also check regarding preparation for exams and time management

January

Check on exams and revision
Check on preparations for semester 2
Semester 2 exchange students arrive: send initial contact emails

February / March

Check on semester 1 exam results for your mentees
Send reminders emails to semester 2 exchange students
Check on accommodation arrangements for the next year for your mentees
Signpost mentors catch-up session

April / May

Check regarding preparation for exams and arrangements for the next academic year
Arrange final mentoring session for active mentees. Final meetings are ideal for joint reflection and review of mentoring
