Aberystwyth University Green Week, 16-20 February
Green Week
13 February 2015
Aberystwyth University will be holding its first ‘Green Week’ from Monday 16th until Friday 20th February 2015.
The week is being organised by the University’s Sustainability Team in conjunction with Aberystwyth Students’ Union.
A series of events will be held during the week, including film nights, campus walks, and a beach clean.
On Wednesday 18th February, staff and students are encouraged to wear green to raise funds for WWF Cymru.
A stall will be in place in the Students’ Union throughout the week. There will also be a display in the University’s Hugh Owen Library on the Penglais Campus.
The aim of the week is to increase awareness of and tackle environmental issues and sustainability across campus.
Janet Sanders, Aberystwyth University Energy Advisor said: “This is the first ever Green Week for Aberystwyth University. The interest and support from students and staff clearly demonstrates their commitment and enthusiasm to make Aberystwyth the most sustainable university it can be. The broad and exciting range of activities pulls together all those great things that we are already doing and wish to do.”
The week will culminate in an NUS ‘Blackout’ energy saving event on Friday 20th.
This is a follow-up to a ‘Blackout’ event in November which involved over 50 staff and student volunteers switching off computers, monitors and chargers that had been left on.
Over the weekend, this reduced the energy consumption of the five buildings involved in the initiative by 22%.
This would equate to a saving of £60,000 and 312 tonnes of Carbon annually if implemented across campus.
Students who would like to volunteer to help with the ‘Blackout’ event can do so online.
