Philomusica concert

Philomusica, Aberystwyth’s own symphony orchestra, will be performing at the Arts Centre on Saturday 4 December, under its conductor David Russell Hulme.
They have a wonderful programme in store culminating with Tchaikovsky’s Romantic masterpiece, the ‘Pathetique’ Symphony. First performed only days before the composer’s death, allegedly by his own hand, the music is charged with a huge range of emotions, all vividly communicated through the composer’s masterly orchestration and those wonderful Tchaikovsky melodies.
Elgar was another master of the orchestra and his exuberant overture Cockaigne opens the programme. A real showpiece for the players, this is a vivid and compelling portrait of Edwardian London, showing the city’s every-day side as well as its grand facade. It is no surprise to find this among the composer’s most frequently performed works.
International trumpet virtuoso Paul Archibald, one of the orchestra’s favourite soloists, returns to play the Trumpet Concerto by Grace Williams. The music made a great impression when Paul and the orchestra first played it together some years ago. Not only one of Welsh composer Grace Williams’s most accomplished works, it is arguably one of the very finest concertos for the instrument ever written. Unforgettable.
There is no mistaking the music of Italian operatic master, Giacomo Puccini. It was in Manon Lescaut he first found his distinctive voice and the haunting ‘Intermezzo’ – unmistakable Puccini – played before Act III, completes the orchestra’s programme.
The concert begins at 8.00 pm and tickets are available from as little as £3.50, with concessions and special prices for children. Book now at the Arts Centre Box Office (01970 623232) and make sure you get a good seat for one of Aberystwyth’s great live music events.
