Following the highly successful reunion of Aberystwyth University alumni held during the National Eisteddfod at Bala in 2009 the University is hosting a similar event at the Blaenau Gwent and Heads of the Valleys National Eisteddfod at 2pm on Wednesday 4th August.
The reception, organised jointly by Aberystwyth University and the Aberystwyth Old Students’ Association, provides Aberystwyth alumni with the opportunity to catch up with old friends and hear about new developments at Aberystwyth.
Guest speaker at the reception this year is alumnus, and recently elected Member of Parliament, Jonathan Edwards. Mr Edwards is the Plaid Cymru MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr and is one of the twelve Aberystwyth University alumni elected to Parliament at this year’s general election.
Mr Edwards holds a BSc Econ in History and Politics (1997) and an MSc in International History from Aberystwyth University. On completion of his academic studies, Mr Edwards worked as Chief of staff for Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Adam Price MP for seven years.
He is a former Carmarthen Councillor and was elected to the historical post of town Sheriff. In 2005 he was given responsibility for strategic matters within Plaid Cymru’s new National Campaigns Directorate.
After the 2007 National Assembly, Jonathan moved to work for Citizens Advice Cymru where he led on Public Affairs, Public Relations and Policy matters.
His main political interests include social justice and foreign affairs whilst his other interests include playing cricket for Penygroes and supporting Swansea City Football Club.
Commenting on the reception, Mr Edwards said: “I’m honoured to be speaking at the Eisteddfod and am looking forward to catching up with old friends at the alumni reception. I have very fond memories of my time at Aber as a student and am certain that my University education has provided me with a sound base for the advancement of my political career.”
Mr Edwards will be introduced by the Vice President of the OSA, Miss Eurwen Richards, an alumna of Aberystwyth University’s Agriculture Department. Attendees will also have an opportunity to join the OSA. Founded in 1892, the Old Students’ Association has over 8,000 members worldwide – all united in a common affection for Aberystwyth University.
The reception is aimed at current and former students of the University and a warm welcome is extended to all.
