Aberystwyth to host Cancer Research Relay for Life
On the 17th and 18th of November 2007 Llinos Thomas and Terry Lynch, Chair and Vice-Chair of the Aberystwyth University Cancer Research Relay for Life committee attended the Third Annual Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Summit in Birmingham.
150 Chairpersons of various Relays from across the country were present at the meeting, including representatives from Birmingham and Lancaster University among others. Llinos Thomas and Terry Lynch, students of International Politics, raised their concerns and shared their experience with others as the first University Relay in Britain in 2007 demonstrating how Aberystwyth students are taking the lead.
Relay For Life is the biggest fundraising event in the world and Aberystwyth University will be hosting the second annual Relay on the 1st March 2008 at the Sports Centre and will be bringing the community together to walk around the track for 24-hours to symbolise that a search for a cure to cancer never ends.
The funds raised by teams are vital to the work of Cancer Research UK. This helps Cancer Research UK to continue pioneering world-class research to improve understanding of the disease and find out how to best prevent, diagnose and treat different forms of cancer.
Individuals from across the University, staff and students, will come together for one day, one night and for one reason - that together they will beat cancer. The event will give families, friends and colleagues a chance to remember loved ones lost to Cancer, hope that those undergoing treatment will survive and celebrate the survival of those who have had cancer with the emotional Candle of Hope ceremony. This is the only time Relay stands still.
