Dr Robert Harrison (1944 - 2007)
It is with great sadness that we record the death of Dr Robert Harrison. Dr Harrison, who died on Sunday after a long illness, had been a member of the Department of History and Welsh History since 1971.
He was a specialist in American history and had written extensively on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American politics, particularly on Congress and on the District of Columbia. His publications, which include Congress, Progressive Reform, and the New American State (CUP, 2004), have made a wholly significant contribution to his field .
Active as a researcher, Robert's was also an extensive teaching commitment, covering a swathe of American history for both history and American Studies degrees. Robert met his lecturing role with energy and conviction, offering tremendous support for his students but in a manner that was entirely calm, quiet and self-effacing.
His friends, colleagues and students in the Department of History and Welsh History will miss him greatly and extend every sympathy to his family, his wife Jean, his sons, Matthew and Stephen, and his mother, Mrs Beatrice Harrison.
A funeral service for Robert will be held at Aberystwyth crematorium on Thursday 10 May at 2.15 pm. Family flowers only. Donations to Cancer Research c/o Trefor Evans, Brongenau, Llandre, Aberystwyth. The Department will also receive donations for the same.
