New University No Smoking policy comes into effect
As a result of new smoke-free legislation which is due to take effect in Wales on Monday 2 April 2007, the University of Wales Aberystwyth has updated its Smoking Policy to meet legislative requirements.

From Monday 2 April onwards, smoking will be prohibited in all University buildings (except residences – see below), semi-enclosed building entrances and outside entrances, windows and other areas where smoke could enter a building. The smoke-free legislation also covers all University vehicles. You can find out more about the legislation at www.smokingbanwales.co.uk.
The University Smoking Policy can be viewed by following the link on the top right hand corner of this page. The Smoking Policy applies to all users of University premises which includes staff and students of the University, and visitors to the University including contractors.

In order to comply with the law, No Smoking signage will be prominently displayed at each entrance to smoke-free premises and in work vehicles. Previous designated smoking areas that have a ceiling or roof, and vehicles, will now fall under the definition of enclosed or substantially enclosed and will no longer be permitted under the new legislation.

Individuals may wish to use this as an opportunity to quit smoking or at least cut down. Free advice on giving up smoking is available from:
- Smokers Helpline Wales 0800 169 0169
- All Wales Smoking Cessation Service 0800 085 2219
Authorised officers within each local authority will enforce the new law across Wales. Penalties include spot fines.

Failure by staff and students of the University to comply with the Policy will result in disciplinary procedures being invoked.

This policy also applies to all parts (individual bedrooms and common areas) of University owned and managed residential accommodation from Sunday 3 June 2007 which is the end of the current academic session.
