Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today

Tom O'Neill, a fourth year mathematics student, has been shortlisted for the GCHQ Prize at the conference Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today 2016. Based on his MMath project, his talk "From Butterflies to Bridges: A Study of Wave Propagation Through Periodic Structures" will discuss mathematical models of waves using Green's functions. TMT is an annual conference aimed at undergraduate mathematicians, sponsored by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and this year it will be held at the University of Greenwich on 13th February. Tom's talk was selected on the basis of a 500 word abstract, and as one of the six finalists he will now have 20 minutes to present his work and persuade the judges to award him the £400 prize.
